The Race for the White House 2016
With the Presidential election just over a year away, the scramble to the primaries is in full swing. The Democratic candidates are Lincoln Chafee, Hillary Clinton, Lawrence Lessig, Martin O'Malley, Bernie Sanders, and Jim Webb. According to the latest polls, Hillary Clinton has a strong lead with Bernie Sanders firmly in second place. Hillary Clinton has built her campaign around progressive actions and equality, such as expanding rights for women and minority groups and shrinking the gap between rich and poor. Bernie Sanders has built his campaign around a socialist society, with an increased minimum wage and low tuition for college students. Most of Clinton’s beliefs are shared with most of the Democrats and is the likely nominee. But she must avoid legal problems with hidden emails before she can worry about leading the nation and also Bernie Sanders has soared in the polls of key states of New Hampshire and Iowa. As for the Republicans, the race for nomination is wide open at the moment. While the Republicans have far more candidates than the Democrats, the ones that have a chance at nomination include Jeb Bush, Ben Carson, Chris Christie, Ted Cruz, Carly Fiorina, Lindsey Graham, Mike Huckabee, John Kasich, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, and Donald Trump. There is obviously a ton of narrowing down to do, but at this point it is a completely wide open race and anywhere from 6-8 could win the nomination. At this point, Donald Trump has built a solid lead with his slogan “Make America Great Again.” Neurologist Ben Carson has shown very well in the two debates and is currently second in the polls. Republican political insider Chandler Anderson weighs in on the race for the GOP nomination: “Realistically, there are very few candidates that have a genuine chance at the nomination, being Donald Trump, Ben Carson, Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush and recently Carly Fiorina after an impressive showing in both the Fox News and CNN debates. However, as more candidates dropout, votes will start to add up against the front runner in Trump. We've already seen evidence of this in the Rubio camp who received a major boost when Scott Walker quit, picking up five former Walker campaign staffers. It's gonna be an interesting race, but I personally believe once the field narrows, voters will see that Rubio has the greatest chance at winning a general election.” This race is sure to be exciting and and will definitely produce fireworks with the primaries coming up in May.
