Feminism in the Ville
Louisville, a beautiful city full of diversity and beauty. Projects like Gallapalooza and the Waterfront art projects are just two of the exhibits that people think of when they hear the name Louisville. There are also many statues downtown, like the well-known statue of David outside of 21c. But think about this, have you ever seen a statue celebrating a woman? A woman who has done something for the city or the world? The answer to this is no; there are no real statues celebrating women in Louisville. One senior, Katie A., came across this realization during her work with Louisville Girls Leadership, a group that empowers high school girls in Jefferson County. The group was studying famous people in Louisville, and when they found that there were no statues celebrating women in Louisville, the girls were so disheartened by this that they took it into their own hands, and they built a statue themselves. The disgusting thought about this is that this is only a single incident that deals with sexism in Louisville alone. This same type of lack of recognition of women is also on a much greater scale throughout the world. For many years, women have been disregarded in the grand scheme of events in history. This is very troubling to think about, especially when considering how far women have come in what they are allowed to do.
