Star Wars Club
A force drives every single one of the students here at CAL, whether it is the force of friends, the force of academics, or the force of their growling stomachs on the way to lunch. Some CAL students, however, just happen to be driven by THE Force. These students formed the Star Wars Club! Everyone at CAL has probably noticed the funny Star Wars posters scattered along the hallway, but few know why such a unique club came into existence, or what it will add to their lives. The founder, Collins Hall, has some interesting answers to those questions
First of all, this club is for people who love or want to know more about Star Wars: that is the only requirement! The intention and vision for Star Wars Club is to unite CAL students across all ages, grade levels, and friend groups with a common love for Star Wars. It's free, and a really fun way for diverse students to connect. Some people may wonder why a movie as old as Star Wars is still bringing people together. So I asked Collins why people still enjoy it so much. He said that while the action-packed lightsaber duels and epic space battles draw a lot of attention, the real appeal of Star Wars is the story of Luke Skywalker. Luke goes from a farm boy living under his aunt and uncle's rule and feeling alone and hopeless in the universe, to redeeming his evil-turned father and leading a rebel force that frees the galaxy from the Empire's oppression. He said this is relevant because many of us feel like Luke; small and insignificant now, but looking to a future where we are a part of something bigger than ourselves.
As for Star Wars related activities for the club, ideas include reading Wisdom of the Jedi, a Christian devotional book that relates themes and passages from the Bible to scenes and quotes from various Star Wars films. They play games themed to or from the Star Wars universe, watch the films and TV shows, and discuss the news surrounding The Force Awakens. They even try to recreate Star Wars food! Blue milk was apparently present at the first meeting. Their ultimate hope is to band together and fill an IMAX theater at midnight to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens. All in all, this club is a perfect opportunity for any fan of Star Wars to experience and appreciate it. The sign-up sheet is on the door of room 719, so sign up and enjoy the original Force.
