The JV Team

Paris. A city dear to all of our hearts. Paris. A place we all want to visit due to its beauty and storied history. Paris. The city that is part of France who helped our great nation achieve independence. Paris. The city that was terrorized on November 13th by an Islamic terrorist group called ISIS.

Millions of people were going on with their day, enjoying a soccer game, a rock band concert, a play, etc. They did not know what was going to ensue on that Friday night. These terrorists knew what time of day it was when everyone would be out in the city for entertainment. That made it more exciting for them as they got to kill more people for their god, Allah. Our President called this group the “JV team,” but that phrase does not seem accurate since they are terrorizing millions around the world and enjoying it.

One could say this is “revenge” for the United States killing their killer, Jihadi John, the morning before. That is a plausible “excuse,” if you call it that. Some of these vicious suspects, who have killed over 150 people and kept even more hostage, are still out on the loose trying to get away for the heinous crime they have committed. Brussels, Belgium was on high terror alert for another attack in their country.

Let’s look at the cause and effect in this situation. ISIS originates out of a hostile country in the Middle East called Syria. They hide behind innocent people so that if we bomb them, we kill innocent people along with the terrorists. Our country would be in outrage if we were to bomb innocent people. The Syrian people are now trying to escape dreadful conditions, and we are left with an ultimatum for our country. Do we want to allow them to enter our country when terrorists have threatened to infiltrate the refugee system and we could then be accepting more terrorists into the U.S.? Or do we want to keep them out just to be safe. For example, last week, in San Bernardino, California, a social services center was ravaged by a Muslim man and his wife/fiancé. They killed fourteen people and have proven connections to a terrorist network, namely ISIS. Many state governors are voting not to let Syrian refugees enter their boundaries, but others are saying we need to welcome refugees to keep our reputation positive. America has always helped those less fortunate, but in helping, could be causing more harm than good? Should our fear direct us, or is this fear actually justified caution? The country is divided on this issue, and even in our own town of Louisville, we may hear opposing sides of the issue being argued among friends and families. Our country will undoubtedly be divided on many more issues in the future if we keep letting the “JV team” stay alive and well.
